Urine Test for Diastase
Urine test for diastase (amylase) is a biochemical analysis aimed at determining the level of the enzyme diastase (alpha-amylase) in urine. Diastase is an enzyme involved in carbohydrate breakdown, primarily produced by the pancreas. The test helps diagnose pancreatic diseases, evaluate treatment effectiveness, and detect other pathologies.
Indications for the test:
- Suspected acute or chronic pancreatitis.
- Cysts and tumors of the pancreas.
- Treatment monitoring of pancreatic diseases.
- Inflammatory processes in the gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidneys.
- Symptoms: band-like abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fever.
Collection and testing methodology:
- Midstream morning urine after hygiene procedures is used for analysis.
- In some cases, 2-hour or 24-hour urine collection is prescribed for higher accuracy.
- Samples should be delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible, preferably within 10 minutes after collection.
- The test is performed using a kinetic method.
Normal values:
- Urinary diastase level in adults usually ranges from 16 to 64 U/L, in children from 10 to 64 U/L.
- Women may have lower levels, which can vary during pregnancy and certain conditions.
Result interpretation:
- Elevated diastase levels may indicate acute pancreatitis, inflammatory diseases of the liver and bile ducts, tumors, pancreatic injury, and other inflammatory processes.
- Reduced diastase levels are seen in chronic pancreatitis, severe hepatitis, kidney failure, cystic fibrosis, and after pancreas removal.
- For accurate diagnosis, the urine diastase test is usually complemented by other tests and clinical evaluation.
Preparation:
- Avoid alcohol, fatty and spicy foods 24 hours before the test.
- Avoid physical exertion and medications without doctor’s approval.
- Maintain genital hygiene before urine collection.
Urine test for diastase is an important diagnostic tool to assess pancreatic health and detect digestive system pathologies.
