Additional Stool Tests

Below is a list of additional types of stool tests that are not part of the standard complete stool analysis (coprogram):

  • Bacteriological culture of stool
Isolation and identification of pathogenic and conditionally pathogenic microorganisms (e.g., Salmonella, Shigella, Escherichia coli, etc.).
    Testing bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics.

  • Stool parasite analysis (PCR, immunological)
Detection of parasite DNA (e.g., Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, Toxocara, etc.) using molecular methods.
    Immunological tests for parasite antigens.

  • Occult blood test by immunochemical methods (ELISA)
A more sensitive and specific test than the classic chemical method.

  • Determination of TU M2-PK enzyme
A marker of tumor processes in the large intestine (colorectal cancer).

  • Fatty acid analysis by gas chromatography
Accurate quantitative and qualitative analysis of fatty acids.

  • Determination of pancreatic enzymes in stool
For example, elastase-1 — an important marker of exocrine pancreatic function.

  • Stool analysis for carcinogenic compounds and toxins
Detection of toxins from intestinal bacteria, e.g., Clostridium difficile.

  • Molecular diagnostics of dysbiosis
Determination of gut microbiota composition using PCR and sequencing methods.
